Rush University Medical Center – Alzheimer’s Family Care Center currently has a unique employment
opportunity as a Recreation Activity Specialist. The Recreation Activity Specialist uses advance
practice skills to plan, develop, implement and evaluate outcomes of therapeutic individual and group
activities for geriatric clients at the center and in the community and performs a variety of client care and
related functions. Serves as a mentor and clinical resource for staff and students to promote an
atmosphere of continual learning. Provides formal and informal leadership to promote effective team and
program functioning. The position will exemplify the Rush mission, vision and values and acts in

Requirements:
1. Bachelor’s degree in a behavioral science or requires knowledge and skills equivalent 3
years experience in organizing activities for people with dementia.
2. Current CPR certification.
3. Current CDL driver’s license.
4. Ability to give and follow oral and written instructions; able to anticipate needs of clients with
dementia and respond appropriately to those needs; able to determine appropriate priorities; able to work
well with a variety of people including clients, families and other health personnel; able to demonstrate
understanding of ethic and respect for confidentiality of client information.
5. Ability to see client’s facial expressions and other non-verbal actions to provide person-centered
care and to monitor client safety.
6. Ability to hear clients' and other staff’s spoken messages in order to respond appropriately.
7. Possesses positional tolerance to reach (overhead, forward and repetitive), to squat, crawl, kneel,
to pivot twist and climb stairs on an occasional basis in the provision of client care.
8. Possesses endurance to sit, stand, walk, bend and push/pull on a frequent basis in the provision of
client care.
9. Ability to perform a two person transfer, for client unable to bear weight, on an occasional basis.
10. Ability to lift 21 to 50 pounds on an occasional basis when assisting with ADLs and implementing
program activities.
