Mission Statement

The mission of Activity Therapists Association is to provide education, networking and professional
enrichment opportunities to persons working in the activity field or those who are interested in the
provision of therapeutic activities. The Activity Therapists Association's education programs focus
on the theory and practice of designing and providing Activities, Therapeutic Recreation, and
Psychosocial interventions to enhance the functional abilities, self-esteem and quality of life for
individuals within long term care, assisted living, retirement, hospital based SNF units and/or adult
day services settings. The ATA is dedicated to promoting the vital importance of Activity Therapy
and in maintaining and improving the physical, mental and emotional well-being of persons across
the health care continuum.

Code of Ethics

The Activity Therapists Association (ATA) is concerned with the development and quality of
resident care in long term care facilities.  To protect the merit placed on this organization, the ATA
has the responsibility of defining the basic principals governing the professional conduct of its
members.
Activity professionals shall…
…place the health and welfare of the residents above all else, including personal and financial
interests, and conduct themselves in the practice of this profession to bring honor to themselves,
their associates, and the activity profession.
…act in a professional and responsible manner regarding the needs and individual lifestyle or
each resident; striving to maintain each resident’s dignity.
…avoid programming where proper medical authority has not been issued or is contraindicated.
…strive to advance the knowledge and practice of activity professionals, including self-
improvement, in order to contribute to the best possible wholistic care.
…refuse to participate in or conceal unethical practices or procedures.
…serve their employer honorably and loyally, discharging the duties and responsibilities entrusted
to them; giving due consideration to the nature of these duties in giving their employer notice of
intent to resign their position.
…report to the proper authority within the long term care facility, any possible violations of
established rules and regulations of the employer or of the professional practice.
…avoid encroachment on the professional responsibilities of the medical or paramedical
professionals and, under no circumstances, assume or appear to assume the right to make
determinations in professional areas outside the scope of their assigned duties.
…participate appropriately in strengthening and developing the quality of professional manpower
and in representing the profession to the public.
…honorably discharge the responsibilities of any ATA position to which appointed or elected, and
preserve the confidentiality of any privileged information made known to them in this capacity.
